How the coconut gets its name.
There is a nice story about this: In the 16th century, the three points on every coconut reminded Portuguese sailors of a smiling face. And “coco” means “smiling face” in Portuguese. Linguistically the word “coco” goes beyond Spanish and Portuguese back to the late Latin “Coccus”. Which means “pip” or “berry”. So we still just think of the smiling face.
